Ray Wheeler joined a group of faculty from Azusa Pacific University’s Operation Impact program in Addis Ababa for two weeks in January to teach a graduate course titled, “Developing the Leader Driven Organization.”

Operation Impact is a distributive education program that provides international leaders with the opportunity to earn a master’s degree in organizational leadership. This accredited degree and education delivery program is very attractive to leaders who want to earn an accredited degree from a University in the United States but who do not want to leave their present leadership roles.

Students enrolled in Ray’s class included officials of the Ethiopian government, business men and women and directors of NGOs. “The diversity of the class created invigorating discussions,” Ray said noting that the composition of the class included Muslims and Orthodox and Evangelical Christians. Ray conducted two classes while in Ethiopia with the students pictured here.

This course is designed to help students create a leadership pipeline strategy consisting of an investigation of leadership emergence patterns, application of the student’s own leadership emergence history and its formative qualities on their assumptions and leadership actions.

Students utilize a critical overview of leadership theories as they relate to the formation of leadership skill, style, capacity and strategy. Students evaluate their organization’s culture, social context and its current and future leadership needs based on a multi-frame perspective as a means to outline a development process for identification, training, assessment and deployment of future leadership potential.

What did the students say about Ray’s impact?

“The class was excellent. The areas covered were very beneficial. The class met my expectations and I gained a mentor!” -

Bethlehem Ayalew, Management Consultant

...“[the class]…was more than I expected…I grasped new leadership and conflict management skills.”

“I am changed. The insights into how leaders process change will help me diagnose problems in a new light.”
